Tax rebate help required (Tax year 19/20)

Hello MSE. I've just got off with the phone to HMRC regarding a tax rebate and I'm not entirely convinced the person on the phone was helpful. He was extremely rude to put it kindly.
Basically I was in a job from 15/4/19 to 4/6/19 but was released due to failing my probation, because I picked up an ACL tear that requires surgery, meaning it was easier for them to release me than pay for a new starter to be off work.

At the time my tax code was BR. I called HMRC who said they had no record of me working there, however I was still taxed a hefty amount and wanted this to be returned as I am now unable to work until after my surgery and need the money. I had to get my P45 and give reference numbers and total pay and tax and such

I was told that because I am on record as working a different job (very casual basis) they wont be able to do anything until I work there again (some months away) or until the end of the tax year (even worse). I am also on universal credit due to not being able to work. Is this definitely the case where I wont be able to claim until I have worked, or is there some way to claim through universal credit or for a cheque to be sent in this current year?

I am in an extremely difficult financial situation and this really has not helped whatsoever as I feel like I'm helpless to claim the money that rightfully is mine. Thanks for your help.

I very much appreciate how stressful this must be for you.

You mention being on universal credit, have the wages been reported correctly via HMRC for their purposes? I ask because you might find an issue going forward if that hasn’t happened.

I could be wrong but I’m not sure they would be able to give you a refund before the end of the tax year? You said yourself you do not know when you will be returning back and with so much of the tax year still remaining I suppose HMRC are reluctant to refund on that basis alone.

I don’t believe you will be able to claim a tax refund through your universal credit account, they are completely separate entities.

Hopefully someone will come along to offer some more structured/constructive advice for you I just didn’t want to read and run

HMRC cannot repay as long as you are showing as employed, even if you are not receiving an income from that employer.

Your casual employer would need to cease you as an employee.

However, any tax rebate you receive will count as income for UC for the assessment period in which you receive it. So 63p in the pound may be deducted from your UC payment.
