car write off, is it worth going through insurance?
Options
Hoping someone more knowledgeable can help. My son rear ended another car this morning. His old Astra worth £1-2K is a write off.
Obviosuly his no claims will be gone because of the claim from the other driver but should he bother putting a claim in for his own loss?
Will this impact on his premium on next renewal? If it will then we're thinking its not worth his while claiming.
thanks
Rob

He’d be foolish not to claim. The harm has already been done with the 3rd party’s damage.0

He should claim for his own car, presuming he has comprehensive insurance.
The total payout wont make any difference to future premiums whether its £1 or £1000.0 -
Another vote for "What's to lose?"
He can't deny the incident happened, since the other party's claiming.
His car's toast anyway.0 -
thanks all for the advice, he will go ahead with claiming although the policy excess will likely swallow up most of the value.

Read his policy T&Cs, I used to think this wasn't allowed, but apparently some companies will end the insurance after paying out a total loss, as well as requiring all the premium to be paid, if it is by instalments, so you can literally end up with nothing, or even less if the value of the car less excess is less than any remaining premium..I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

Would he not have to pay that excess anyway because the 3rd party will be making a claim on his policy?
I think the excess would be for his own vehicle.
How bad is the damage, bolt on parts or chassis legs, panel gaps closed up? It may be better for him if he doesnt claim and sells the car as damaged and un-recorded, folk on ebay will lap it up !0
