Back Order (Ford UK)

Hello,
Just looking for ideas from anyone "in the know" on this issue.

In brief, my car (66) has been off the road for over a month now. The dealer (who has been good, and have offered to source a hire car in the meantime) has been informed by Ford that the part needed is on "Back Order". It appears to mean that nobody has any idea when the part will be back in stock.

I just wondered if anyone on here has had a similar experience, or may have other knowledge which could help me to progress this issue.

Cheers in advance.

Yes last year with a smart. If the part isn't available there's not a lot you can do.

Do you have a courtesy car?

Used to work in the Parts Dept. (not Ford) for more years than I care to remember.
When parts are ordered, they will be a normal timetable of when they should arrive. For example a VOR(vehicle off road) special order should arrive the next day, while one on a (weekly) stock-order may take ten days.
The back order (B/O) notification may come quite quickly, or the Ford warehouse thought it had stock, but when the order was to be picked - nothing there.
What happens next - the Dealership should be pressing Ford Parts for an availability date, they in turn should be chasing their supplier (who knows where) for a date.
Depending how obscure this part is, maybe the Dealership could do a ring-around some of the other large Ford Dealerships in the country - in case they have one in stock!
Or, depending how many of your car there is about - maybe they could source a second hand part.

    Indeed.

It means that Ford have no stock in the UK or Germany, and the supplier doesn't, either. So it's waiting for another batch to be manufactured.

What part/car are we talking about, anyway?
  • Hmm had the same with Vauxhall a few years ago with a new shape astra...back order part meant car was off road some considerable time after a car accident....thankfully a replacement car to use temp was soon sorted

Thank you very much for the responses. They certainly shed more light on what is going on. I had not thought of trying to ring round some of the larger dealerships, I may work on that myself.

The missing part is apparently a retainer clip for a fuel injector (BMax) and it seems the issue is the subject of a Ford T.S.B (Technical Service Bulletin).I learn something everyday. Your reply,no1catman, pretty much bears out exactly what I have been told by my local dealer.

As I say the dealer has been as helpful as they can be. They have offered me a courtesy car, and I will likely take them up on this if the part does not come through soon.

Again, many thanks for the responses.

Ah... So the TSB is probably seeing a run on the clips being replaced on every car coming in for service, which is going to hit the stocks very hard.

The Ford/PSA 1.6 diesel, by any chance? An engine with a long-standing reputation for oil sludging which can usually be traced back to slightly loose injectors.

Final Note. Many thanks to no1catman. I have just had my car back, all sorted. I went down a route that you suggested. I was able to track a part down from an alternative dealer. Without your suggestion, I know my car would be still off the road. Thank you very much.
