Getting a copy of a cashed cheque

Hi
Do banks keep records or images of cheques, if so for how long.
I was looking through my old passbook and I had noticed that I had paid in a cheque but I cannot for the life of my remember what it related to and who wrote it. I was wondering if building societies keep records of cheques. They are closed today so will need to phone them tomorrow but from experience their stock response is going to be ; no we don't have that information.

I think that banks need to keep about seven years worth of transactions and this would include cheques. You are likely
To find that they charge you to provide a copy though.

Which bank are you with whose telephone banking is closed on Sundays!?

Either way what Ballard says is basically correct - you can ask, they may have it, they will probably charge a fee for the privilege of providing a copy (around the range of £5-10.)
