Kindle for avid 9.5 year old

My GD lives abroad and always bring books with her to read wherever she goes. She is an avid reader with a high reading age. We’ve all been n holiday together and she loved using my kindle - which is over 10 yeas old so a basic one compared to those around now!

My question is I’d like to buy her a kindle especially to cut down on the weight of the suitcases. She does have an iPad but that is quite heavy/awkward to hold and read at bedtime and also doesn't have a light. I’m looking at JL because of the two year guarantee. Their cheapest kindle is £70 and the next one is £119.99 which I am more than happy to pay especially as we don't see her very often. I would prefer her to have an update to one especially as they have a built in light now. Useful at bedtime.so I know it will be used. If anyone has either of these could you please let me know what your thoughts are on them.

I know some people will say books can’t be replaced but she will also still read books, just like I do. My son and DIL are in agreement to her having one.

2 devices and one can do the same thing as the other, is one is more useful, but heavier, and will probably be taken on holiday anyway, even if only for internet use?

I'd be more inclined to give her the old kindle and add on a second present

Would highly recommend the Kindle Paperwhite, and getting a cover that opens out so it feels like reading a book ( this might sound daft, but book lovers will know what I mean!)

My daughter prefers real books. You can't get everything on the kindle.

I'm still using the Kindle I bought back in January 2012:o as it still does what I want it to.

I read an article in Which? magazine only this morning and they scored the £70 2019 version 91%, compared to the Paperwhite £119 89%. On that basis alone I'd buy the new one.

£50 would buy a cover - essential IMHO, and lots of books - either virtual or real;)

As an alternative school of thought, a lot of libraries provide eBooks as part of their offering now, typically Borrowbox. You can load the app onto a mobile phone or a tablet.

The range on a lot of these isn't as wide as the Kindle but at least its free.

The new one has a lighted screen now (4 leds opposed to 5 for the paperwhite).. I've got a paperwhite that I've had for a good few years and it's great. Given the choice then I'd big the 70 version, a case and a gift voucher so she can add some books.
