Places to live in Glasgow

Hi all :)

Can anyone point me in the direction of a thread about Glasgow areas? I'm sure there must be one??

We're thinking of moving to Glasgow next year (we're also looking at Southend!! Bit of a difference!!).

OH has family in King's Park and Knightswood, and a bit further out in Bishopton. I fell in love with Knightswood the first time we visited 13 years ago but OH was never keen (obviously we looked at other west-end type areas but we only really know Knightswood).

The other night we were playing on GSPC and tried East Dunbartonshire - think Bearsden is meant to be nice? There were loads of decent looking houses around our price range so think OH may be coming round

Any thoughts welcome. I'l be working in the city centre I imagine (accountant) and OH is a postie so may be able to transfer.

Many thanks :)

depends on what you're looking for and what you're willing to pay. don't forget that in scotland (if you're buying) its usually 'offers over' which is particularly hard on the buyer i feel. its horses for courses.

the 2 'leafy suburbs' in glasgow for aspiring type people are bearsden in the west and newton mearns in the south (although i'm sure both areas have their own 'better' and 'less better' bits. both are a fairly big (10-12 mile)commute to the city centre though.
the other posh place is glasgow west end (by the university). not particularly child friendly though (although people do raise families very well there)and lots of old victorian tenement housing.

kings park is in the south- sorry i don't know much about it but there are some detached nice looking houses there. not sure about local amenities though.

knightswood in the west of glasgow and a bit far out there. also has a lot of rough bits, i believe. i can see why you liked it though. prices should be a bit lower there.

bishopton isn't even on my radar.
i must stress that these are only my own impressions and glasgow is full of people who love their own neighbourhoods no matter which one and wouldn't think of living elsewhere.

it really depends what you want, city center, bits of the west end and southside are party capitals but no parking, if you are looking a family place then on of the sububan towns is probably a better idea.

the big problem with glasgow is the m8 and perticualy the kingston bridge is a total car park, if you get a job on the other side of glasgow you could genuinly be looking at adding 5 hours a week to your commute.

i would see where the jobs i was getting offered were before i went any further, this is from a guy who live 4 mins from the motorway and whos job is next to the junction 40 miles away on the same motorway yet i have to drive via backroads if i want to make any sort of progress and reliable timing.

    What type of property: flat/semi/detatched?

Do you have your own transport?

Knightswood recently had a dispersal zone due to some 'garden parties' getting a bit rowdy. Like all districts, it has it's good and bad bits. Quite a few new privately developed estates in the last 10 years or so.

Surrounding Knightswood you have Jordanhill (G13/G14), Scotstoun (G14) and Old Drumchapel (G15): all of these have semi and detatched properties.

Bearsden: poor public transport (IMHO), lower Council Tax(?), good access to Glasgow. IIRC, mostly private housing.

I try never to venture south of the Clyde ......... :D
  • We stay in Bearsden, it's quite nice here, decent shops around, 22 minutes to the city centre by train, but expensive houses by Scottish standards. Depends what your budget is and what you are looking for, compared to many areas of England it is cheap here!
  • Thanks for all your replies :T

I hadn't realised how bad the M8 is at rush hour I must admit. In my job I work out at different clients every week so I imagine travelling would be quite an ordeal then?? It's bad enough round here but if you know alternative routes to avoid the motorways it's not too bad. Hmm.

Having never actually been to Bearsden I didn't realise it was so far out either :o Totally clueless!

The houses we were looking at were mainly semis, a few detached. The fixed-price ones looked fantastic and a lot "cheaper" than the ones round here - I say "cheaper" cos these houses go up for silly prices and then never sell so you've no idea how much it's really worth!!

I really want to go up for a few days but we can't get time off work this close to Christmas  so it looks like January now.

  • I would not say we are far out in Bearsden. By road it is 8 miles to the centre of Glasgow, as the crow flies 6 miles, and we are on the far northwest of Bearsden, some parts are only 5 miles by road. The train takes a while as there are lots of stops.
If you are travelling to clients then you would need to take your car. Unless you have parking at work then parking in town is expensive, but there are plenty of carparks if you are there early. Even going into the shops it is only a problem around Christmas.
If I leave here about 7.45am I can be in town before 8.30 by car, leave it later and you get stuck in the traffic.

You will get a modern 4 bed detatched for around £290k at present, a 3 bed semi for £235k. But it also depends on the area of Bearsden.

What is nice is that although we are convenient for town we are right next to the countryside too. We have fields with sheep etc only a few hundred metres away, and it is less than 30 minutes to drive to Loch Lomond.

There is Lenzie, Stepps and Bishopbrigs to the North of the City, both have Good and bad bits too but are looked on as good areas, It's not a big drive from them to Bearsden on the other side of the city.

Try the south side of the Clyde ( same side as Kings Park ) Renfrewshire or Ayrshire.

Stewarton is a wee toon with character only 17 miles down the M77 form Glasgow.

Prices in Ayrshire are far better than Bearsden and you have Glasgow and Prestwick airports on your doorstep for holidays or a visit to England - tho not for the International footie for a while ........

I just wanted to speak up for the Southside!!!!
I live very near to Kings Park and it has some very nice bits.. Personally I'm from Mount Florida (where Hampden football Park is and think its lovely) There is also Cathcart and Clarkston that are nice. If you want to avoid the rush hour then get somewhere near the train line as its very efficient.
I used to live by Queens Park (there are loads of parks in Glasgow - one of the many reasons why I moved back after Uni down south)
Anyway there are some really nice places around there with a 6 minute train link into Glasgow central station that run frequently. Generally it was a very good service.
I think really you need to come up and explore it for yourself - good luck with the move wherever it is.

I would agree, the southside is nice, in fact we are considering moving there to be closer to our grandson. They are in Clarkston. Newton Mearns is nice too, but a little further out. Good shops at Mearns Cross too, and quite handy for Braehead. In fact there are lots of nice areas all around Glasgow.
The parks on the southside are better too, Rouken Glen is my favourite.
If schools are important for you then you should check that out first.
