However they do need to verify id etc but with many of the new banks not having any branches surely there should be a way the traditional banks can do this without a physical visit to a branch?
I have over the last decade or two applied for several dozen current accounts, and a similar number of savings accounts. The only bank that ever wanted me to appear in branch to process the application is Barclays, for reasons I don't understand and they are unwilling to reveal. All the rest processed my applications electronically. Even if many others had turned me down, there are now the app-only banks (Starling, Monzo etc), and there is also the Post Office. As consumers, we have a choice. We just have to exercise it.

I'm pretty sure that HSBC wanted to see me to check ID. As it happened going into branch really speeded up that process.

Going into NatWest did quite the opposite- chaos with totally wrong info. (worth a complaint it was so bad!)

Fortunately we have a complete matching set of banks in town, walking distance, so no great horrors except they are small branches. I wonder how long they will all stay open with the cutbacks?
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
