Phantom Bin Dumper?

Hi all, after some suggestions on a problem I have with a phantom bin dumper...

Few weeks ago talking to a neighbour who complained about a phantom bin dumper. Someone keeps filling their bin with "smelly" rubbish and they have had to take their bins around their back garden to prevent it.

Well whomever it is they have started dumping in my bins as well. Not only have they over-filled the general waste bin that I can no longer close the lid (and my council state they will not empty a bin which is overfull) but they are also dumping their rubbish in my recycling bin (which annoys me more than using my general waste bin!)

So after some suggestions if you could please. Current thoughts are:

1. Take the bins around my back garden which is a pain as there are three of them and they aren't exactly small. Would then have to manoeuvre them around the side path and through two gates to put them out.
2. Put up some form of sign warning the phantom bin dumper about their actions. Apart from potential tresspass though not sure if they are doing anything illegal?

3. Install CCTV but I'd rather avoid that expense.
4. Setup some form of non-dangerous booby trap like popping a balloon if the lid is opened.

This has got to be one of my neighbours, currently suspect next door whom have thrown rubbish over into my back garden in the past but at this moment don't have any evidence and if I go talk to them will just get the brush off like in the past...

Cheers.

It's a bit grim but is there any 'identifiable' rubbish eg an address?

I think I'd pop round to the neighbours (including the one i suspected) and ask any of them if they'd had a similar problem and if they could 'keep an eye out' for me.

The smelly part.. you can get various bin fresheners.. not ideal and an extra cost but might make things more pleasant. I have to leave my bins out front as they are 'assisted collection' due to disabilities and have used some powder shaken into bin to help control odours in summer.

You can get cheap small CCTV cameras for very little; I'd use one or simply move the bins.

Or fill the empty bin with hornets.

I'd take them around the back in the first instance -- presumably you only need to bring one around to the front each week. Hopefully they'll deal with the rubbish more responsibly once they don't have easy options to dump it onto others. Best to avoid any conflict in such matters where possible.

If you catch your neighbour on CCTV, what are you going to do about it?

If you don't have any means of stopping them even when you know who is doing the dumping, move your bins to your back garden and prevent the problem.

Get a lock installed on your bins.

yep, why bother with a short walk round the back of your house when you can spend money on more stuff?!

Report them to the council for fly tipping - it is an offence, and the council should take action.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

If these people have thrown rubbish into neighbours' gardens and are now dumping in bins, what will they do to the person who reports them to the council?

Why bother with a short walk once a week/fortnight with 1 wheelie bin and recycling bins/containers, and having to have your wheelie bin in your front garden, when you can spend a few pounds on a lock and solve the problem?

Not sure what your axe to grind is, but if I was the OP I would not be deciding to change my entire behaviour and having wheelie bins in my back garden to suit someone else's laziness. A simple bin lock is easy to install, just unlock it on bin day by which time the person will likely have moved onto lower hanging fruit and OP can probably stop using it at all as it will still look locked.
