Microsoft money alternatives

I've used microsoft money for years but now I'm thinking of switching to a Mac I figure it's time for a new accounting package. Which would people recommend?

I think there is a budgeting app built in to Mac OS, but not sure how effective it is.

I've dabbled with Money Dashboard and YNAB but not sure exactly what works for me.

So would also be interested in replies....

I use AceMoney -comes in a Mac version, too. I have only used the Windows version and can't comment on the Mac version. Windows is basically like MS Money, and it was very easy to import my MS Money data into AceMoney.

When I switched to using a MacBook 7 years ago I originally continued to use MSMoney in a windows virtual machine. When looking for a native alternative I settled after a few months for iBank. This eventually became Banktivity and I'm still using it today. It was fairly easy to migrate my MSMoney data at the time.

I quite like Moneywiz, which has Mac and iPad apps, as well as other operating systems. ;)
Retired at age 56 after having "light bulb moment" due to reading MSE and its forums. Have been converted to the "budget to zero" concept and use YNAB for all monthly budgeting and long term goals.
  • I use AceMoney and have done since the switch in 2017.

As stated before, very much like MS Money and easy to use.

Can import QIF files if you want to preserve MS Money data.

More than that, AceMoney provide you with a detailed MS Money migration guide. I have not seen any of the other budgeting apps to do this, though I haven't checked in the last couple of years.

MS Money has been perfect for me for 20 years as it closely links investments and cash accounts. I am also dependent on its highly configurable reports.

In those circumstances is AceMoney a viable alternatve? What would I lose if I had to transfer? AceMoney seems to be purely US with 401Ks etc. Is this a problem in practice? How about share/fund price downloads - does that work for UK investments? Will it accept download transactions from the major banks?

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

I guess you'd have to try it out whether it meets your requirements. It's perfect for me, and yes, it downloads all share & fund prices known by the major providers (FT, Google Finance, MSN Money, Yahoo Finance, Russian Trade System, Bloomberg, Crypto, AMFI India, India Times). It does not automatically download/import transactions from any UK bank, though you can do manual imports (like I think you can do with MS Money). I have heard negative comments about the AceMoney reports but I am happy with the ones I need. There is also an active AceMoney user community who may be able to help with hints and tips, though they are usually Americans.

I had the same problem - years ago now, when I switched to Mac... I moved from MS Money to iBank - now called Bankivity.
