With the popularity of dashcams nowadays, I notice many have the built in screen on, is this actually legal? The screen is not required to be on whilst recording, I couldn't find the HC rules on this but found this "It is legal to use a screen visible to the driver if the screen is part of a vehicle navigational system or vehicle control system. It is legal to have a closed circuit video system used only to help the driver's rear or side visibility."

Which to me suggests it is not permitted?

    Most screens turn off after a set time, unless there is a reason for the user to disable that and enables it to always on.

    I know they made changes when vehicles like the Range Rover had camera's fitted to aid rear visibility whilst driving, that provided a live feed of the blind spots.

    Are dash cams classed the same as live video still? Screens only need to be used to position the camera, after that its not much use. Unless its a large screen you use as a reverse cam. Most are fairly small though.

    Try thinking about it a slightly different way......

    Which law or rule would prohibit their use? Unless fitted in such a way as to obscure the drivers vision I can't see an problem.
  • Construction and Use Regs

    S 109.—(1) No person shall drive, or cause or permit to be driven, a motor vehicle on a road, if the driver is in such a position as to be able to see, whether directly or by reflection, a television receiving apparatus or other cinematographic apparatus used to display anything other than information—

    (a) about the state of the vehicle or its equipment;
    (b) about the location of the vehicle and the road on which it is located;
    (c) to assist the driver to see the road adjacent to the vehicle; or
    (d) to assist the driver to reach his destination.
    (2) In this regulation “television receiving apparatus” means any cathode ray tube carried on a vehicle and on which there can be displayed an image derived from a television broadcast, a recording or a camera or computer.

    The reference to Cathode ray tube must have been updated somewhere by now but I can't see it.
