Cheque made out to deceased family member

I was the nearest next of kin to my late mother, who passed away last autumn. My younger sister and I (her only children) took care of closing our mother's bank accounts, and settling her remaining bills, etc. There was no will and no property to take account of.

Now a cheque has arrived made out to the deceased and we are at a loss as to what to do with it.

Ask the person who sent it to make it out to you and your sister assuming that you were the only beneficiaries.

But in any case, contact the person/company who sent the cheque to see what they require to reissue it

They may also try to charge you for reissuing the cheque if it's something like a dividend payment (that you didn't know about). If it's only a small sum of money it may not be worth it.

(Make sure you explain the circumstances and they may agree to waive any charge).

When I had the same problem, in my confusion I may have inadvertantly paid in the cheque anyway using one of the automated machines where the payee isnt checked. Whether that would still work now that the banks are gearing up to full checks I dont know. Either way I certainly would not suggest that you make the same error.
