Problems before tenancy even started

Hi,

We found a house to rent a few weeks ago. It was advertised through an agent but the landlord will be managing the property themselves. As the landlord (who is currently living in the property) has pets we asked for the house and carpets to be cleaned before we moved in. I'm highly allergic to pets and we explained this to the agency, who were great and took it really seriously.

Paperwork all signed, cleaning and carpet cleaning all included in the contract.

We are expecting to collect the keys this weekend. However we had a phone call earlier to say that although the carpet cleaning has been booked and will take place this week, the cleaning of the rest of the house won't be until Monday next week. Apparently the landlord booked this for the Monday as they knew we aren't fully moving in this weekend, just simply collecting keys and moving furniture in.

I've complained to the agent, but just got a ' any issues please discuss with the landlord once you've moved in' response.

I'm not happy as the property won't be clean and not at all keen to move in furniture and items if it's still full of pet hair! Any advice?

Do you have to move this weekend?
Are you able to delay the move (and tenancy start) until the cleaning is done?
What does the contract state about cleaning? Does it specify before start of tenancy?

Why on earth if you are seriously allergic to pets did you decide to rent a house which has had pets living in it now?

Probably because they possibly are looking at compensation further down the line... it beggars belief
