They recently discontinued the app that let you do it on any phone and it's really hard to tell which older androids have it. But any iphone 5s or newer will do it. I picked one up from ebay for £30, and it runs ios 12, which will apparently do for the app if it becomes necessary.
After that it's just a chargeable call or a text every couple of months to keep the number and credit. Phone your own landline if you have to- as long as you or the voicemail picks up it'll count. A £5/£10 credit (whichever is the minimum) will last a while with this.
If you get the free PAYG 321 data sim with 200MB free per month from the Three website you can top up from £2.
With regards to older iphones, you’d be better looking for an SE as it’s much newer and more powerful internally and is still currently supported so likely to be useable for years still. They don’t sell for a great deal more than the 5s as well.====0 -
I don't mind needing to use OTP on a phone but I absolutely refuse to download any mobile banking app. I don't see why Santander won't let me use a 3rd party authenticator such as one from Google or a free open source one like andOTP...
Its absolutely ridiculous that you will now need to download all these mobile banking apps. I got one from Skipton the other day, I mean do I now need to download their app too?
Realistically, most people only need one or two banking apps. Now we will need to have a banking app for every bank we have an account with - who thought that was a great idea
EDIT:2. By using One Time Passcode (OTP).
If you don’t have our mobile banking app, we’ll send an OTP to your mobile phone as the additional check that it’s you.
Whichever way you choose, we’re only using the mobile banking app or the OTP to help confirm it’s you. You can continue to use your personal Online Banking as normal once the check has been completed.
Well it seems you don't need to download the app, so thankfully that is okay for me. Still doesn't help the OP though..0 -

Probably because it runs the risk of coming back to bite them on the backside should one speak to them about fraudulent transactions that were authenticated by a third party app. At least if they are in control of the checks by sending the texts/app alerts out, that provides them with some cover.
With regards to Three PAYG, their wif-calling app (the old Three inTouch app) is discontinued. You can only use this if you have a phone that's wifi calling capable/enabled.
There are four mobile networks in this country, it's entire possible that you should be able to get a signal of some sort (even if its weak and good for texts) on one of them unless you live underground...0 -
Can anyone tell me if you need an OTP in order to install, setup and use the Santander app on both platforms?0
