Roof rack v. Back rack
Options
we need extra space for our camping equipment and think that a box will solve our problems.
We have seen the Thule range at Halfords and think that a roof box will be awkward to reach, plus it affects the MPG. Another solution is the Back Box but it is really expensive.
Has anyone got either box and can say what they like or dislike about them? I want to know about quality of materials, fitting instructions, weatherproofness, ease of getting into the boot when a rack is fitted, and security of locks etc.

I had a Thule Back Box. I've never had a roof box of any sort so can't comment on that.
Pros - easy to take on and off. Instructions are good. It's a bit fiddly to attach the box to the rack but the whole thing comes off the towball very easily; don't notice it when on - no wind noise or increased fuel consumption; easily accessible and huge capacity; fairly solid; rack can be used separately for bikes, small pieces or furniture, etc.; lockable (including an optional tow hitch lock)
Cons - expensive; although it's lockable it's not very secure, boot doesn't open when on (on my Mk 7 Golf); a bit awkward to lug around and store; could look scruffy with use - scratches easily.
It's quite well made although inevitably a bit flimsy when not attached. When it's on it's solid enough and looks good. Don't know about weatherproofing although I would assume it is. I used mine once then sold it on eBay for not a lot less than I bought it for.0
