Business gas is a very different beast to domestic and you need to be very aware - there is an assumption that as you are in business you know what you are doing.

Any of the big 6 and others will supply you with gas under a contract often 12 , 24 or 60 months - once committed there's no going back. The tariff will be a standing charge and units - VAT is 20% - beware the standing charge will be high - perhaps £5 a day.

    Every contract is different.

A Business classified as a 'micro-business' now enjoys much of the protection afforded to domestic accounts.

You should do some research on this aspect if you are not a large business.

Standing Charge means the same as it does in the domestic market - the cost of maintaining the mains and pipes and meters supplying you.

I've got 2 supplies - the first has a standing charge of £3.66 a DAY and units of 2.7p / kwh but this is for a annual consumption of 175,000 kwh (perhaps 20 times what is used in a house. The second is £2.75 a DAY and 2.75 p /kwh but for a much smaller supply of 70,000 kwh. Don't forget VAT for a business is 20%

The standing charges mean that my monthly bill are about £100 even with my boilers switched off.

What sort of business are you looking at doing?

    Micro business consumer

A non-domestic consumer is defined as a micro business if they meet one of the following criteria:
    • employs fewer than 10 employees (or their full time equivalent) and has an annual turnover or balance sheet no greater than €2 million; or
    • uses no more than 100,000 kWh of electricity per year; or
    • uses no more than 293,000 kWh of gas per year.

thanks for info everyone that replied

to explain its for a large converted garage im thinking to heat using gas for IT work ( think lots of desktop computers / servers etc ) its fine now in summer but come winter itll need fair amount of heating.

are their initial connection/setup costs to have Gas switched back on ? and in your honest opinion what companies are good and who should i avoid ? im thinking British Gas or eon but happy to hear what its realy like to deal with any supplier eg do they do paper bills still or is it all online etc thanks

I think gas will be least of your problems. My only advice re business gas is go direct to the suppliers - I've had no issues. Currently with Total Gas and Power; been with Gazprom. Meters are Smart - the Smartness transferred OK when I changed suppliers. Online bills - forget paper (you're in the IT industry !)

You need a gas safe engineer to check your installation.

Have you looked into business rates, water rates, buildings, contents, employer liability, public liability, employment law , minimum wage .......................................
