Oil change

Probably a silly question

I checked my oil this week and it's halfway down the acceptable marking on the dipstick. I would usually buy some oil to top it up but I have a service due in a couple of weeks. If they do an oil change should I just leave it as it will be emptied and replaced anyway?

Cheers

From the top to the bottom markings is usually only one litre then there's usually another 3.5-4.5 litres below the bottom marking ( depending on the car ) so it isn't a problem.
  • Cheers both!

Check it once every six months as it never seems to go down.
I know that isn't enough! Maybe it's using more oil as it's getting older. 4 year old Mk7 golf with 35k on clock and serviced annually

you should check it more frequently than that, a lot more.

That's hardly old or high miles, far from it.

You should check all your levels at least monthly and tyres weekly.

  • Yes I think I got complacent as every time I checked the oil it was always at maximum and my tyres never seemed to go down. Will start the good habit now!

Interesting to know the oil markers aren't necessarily showing you the total amount

Do you check them with a gauge or just look at them?

I have a MK7 GTD. VW permit an oil consumption of around 1200 miles per litre as not abnormal (it's in the handbook).
