Have they threw their redundancy away

Hi looking for some advice for a friend .

My friends worked for a company from home 3 days a week, only 18 hrs a week for just over 2 years, last week (Tues I think) they got a call from the manager saying their dept was being taken away and the whole team would be let go.

My friend straight away went job hunting and asked their manager for a reference and they said they would be happy to supply one.
My friend was offered a job to start Tuesday, so they went to work today at he new job, and spoke to previous job today as that's the first day the old work where open after the weekend, and told them they started with another employer .

They said they were due a couple days holidays owed.
When they returned from work they found a letter informing them they would be entitled to reundency and that their last day of work would have been 20th july.

So, from what iv can they my friends has sacrificed their reundency and 3 week's pay so as to get a job straight away.
My friend says they need the reference no won't say anything.

Just to confirm what I think I already know, but am I right in thinking they basically left before their last work date so loses out?
Thing is she can sometimes work from home for months without speaking to anyone at work, so could have kept shtumm and just got the new job and not told anyone, well apart from the reference that is.
Thanks.

3 weeks pay and them having to find a job.
    Or
find a job and have continuous employment and no concerns about not having an income.

I would have done the same with such a short service record with the employer.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.

Yes, they've wisely chosen to stay employed rather than hang around for the redundancy.

Always best to beat the stampede.

I think other posters are more picking up on the length of service. If they had worked there for 10, 20 yrs etc with a good redundancy package then you'd probably be right that it may not be the best option to get another job pre-redundancy. Especially if it's in a field where jobs can be easily obtained.

In your friends situation with only 2 yrs employment and 18 hr weeks then it wouldn't be a huge redundancy payment to tide them over if no job could be found for a couple of months, hence just moving on is probably right.

If this new job is an additional job and they carry on doing their old job they could still work their notice and get paid.

If they have walked away too late.
