Driving without MOT

Options
Hi everyone,

I have an unusual situation regarding my car and its MOT status.

I imported the car from Jersey into the UK this year, and as part of that process I was asked to get it MOT'd. I did that under its Jersey plates, and sent the certificate to the DVLA. They have since registered the vehicle under a new registration, so it's taxed and insured on the new UK plates. However, the record of the MOT is still on the old Jersey plates. I contacted the DVSA last week and they have applied for the MOT records to be synchronised, so it shows that the new registration has an MOT against it. They said it would take up to 5 days.

The issue is that online the new UK registration still shows as having no MOT (5 working days later), and I need to drive the car across the country this weekend. I have the certificate for the MOT on the previous Jersey plates, along with the Jersey plates themselves.

My question is, will I be able to legally drive the car this weekend? I'm worried that an ANPR might pick me up as having no MOT and that my 'proof of MOT' in the form of the old plates and the certificate may not be enough.

I'm going to call the DVSA again today, but does anyone have any thoughts or advice?

As long as the car passed and it's on the MOT database as having passed and you have the correct documents to show the change of plate you'll be fine.

Does the MOT record show the VIN number? That would be definitive proof if necessary.

In any event, in the worst case it's hardly the crime of the century - £100 fine.

I'd take the risk. Not having an MOT is a fine and no points - and if it came to it, you could explain the full circumstances to police or a magistrate.

Yes, I just checked and the MOT certificate has the VIN (or at least the last part of it, which I assume is related specifically to that vehicle), which matches what's on the V5C.

Sounds like I should be okay. Thank you all for the replies!

As long as it has the last 6 numbers you'll be ok with the police.

Yea it’s not an issue. Same as if I put a private reg plate on my vehicle. The identifiable is the chassis plate number.
