Closing a joint account

Hello,
My partner holds a joint account with an ex partner whom he no longer has any contact with or knows the whereabouts of. He had recently applied for a small loan and it has been accepted however they have paused the claim due to an indicator on his account which has turned out to be that account.
The bank and himself have no way to contact her to get a signature to close the account which the bank say they need for it to be possible. Is there anything he can do? Maybe hand the account over to her or simply remove himself from the account?
