at the point of replying to the Small claims letter, I don't need to have a defence put together just yet?

Everything you are asking is already here, including CEL defences already written, so 'ADVANCED search' the forum for Civil Enforcement defence and read the recent ones, where you will see everything you've been told has already been chewed over several times and put into more than one defence, that you simply copy & adapt.

This is so easy once you come off this thread and start searching, and read bargepole's thread linked in the NEWBIES so you know what to do when.
