PCN confusion!!!

Hi
I bought a van off somebody I know and they deliberately filled in the V5C/logbook with my school nickname. The very first day I drove the van home, I accidentally drove in a bus lane.
The subsequent two PCNs was sent to the original registered keeper of the van, because the council were confused by the nickname on my V5C. This person didn't tell me about the PCNs or the reminders, so eventually the total amount was £180-00 which this person suddenly paid in full without consulting me.
This person then contacts me and demands I reimburse him for £180-00!!! What is the legal position here? Does anybody know? I would've thought considering he deliberately filled in the V5C incorrectly and then proceeded not to tell me about the PCNs etc, etc whilst finally paying the £180-00 without asking me first, would mean he wouldn't have a leg to stand on from a legal perspective?
Any advice much appreciated.

Take this to pepipoo for best advice
This forum majors on private parking invoices rather than proper council fines0 -
Indeed, however if they paid it, I doubt they have any recourse against you; they should have given your PROPER name and address and sent it there
DO you have the V5 in your possession? SUrely you noticed....0
