Using cash machines in the USA

Options
Hello

I am flying to Seattle and going down the west coast to Las Vegas. I will be using a Starling card and just wanted to know are there any cash machines that are free, or will I be charged?

Thank you

Not long come back from the US and used my Starling card for purchases and cash machines.

I found that withdrawing cash from ATM's in shops or hotels didn't charge yet banks did (Chase being one of them from memory) - Wells Fargo didn't charge me

Just had a look through my transactions and I can see I was charged twice but I can't remember the other place and it's not listed as what/where/who

You're only talking about $3-5 so not much in the grand scheme of things, but you save a lot by paying on Starling then using a credit card - well, that was our experience.

We were there in 2017 and used the cc for paying for hotels, car hire etc and we paid over £300 in non sterling transaction charges - this time, nothing.

    I love my Starling card
  • Do you mean like the portable ATM's we have in places like small convenience stores and petrol stations? They normally charge us here, but these are normally free in the US?

I didn't manage to find any fee free ATMs in the US on my last visit. I used Monzo, Starling and Revolut, great to use in shops etc so kept my cash usage to a minimum.

Are you departing from Gatwick or Stansted?

The portable type ATMS in places like McDonald’s and convenience stores tend to be cheaper than banks, Wartmart can often be cheap (if it’s a Walmart ATM rather than a bank located within Walmart. But just get a small amount here for tips before you go and use your card for all purchases.

carry a back up card. Im in the usa now, and for some reason starling decided that i needed to re-verify my information again. 300 miles away from my passport my app was locked into the submit details page (passport and video yourself saying verify me).

worse still i couldnt withdraw any money until I'd done it. I do plan on emailing them and asking for a full explanation, p1ssed off is an understatement!

This doesn't help the OP, departing from Manchester, but for others using Gatwick, Stansted or Southend airports a supply of foreign currency can be taken from the MoneyCorp multi-currency ATMs at the MasterCard exchange rate by using most fee free cards.

Select 'Without Conversion' when the screen displays the choice, to allow your card to convert from pounds, instead of MoneyCorp at their atrocious rates. If the option is not given, cancel and take out your card.

It works with Monzo, Starling and with credit cards, but not usually with 'regular' bank debit cards, for which no option to decline conversion is given. I'm not sure about Metro Bank, I think I tried but I forget the result. Tandem CC will charge you for a domestic cash advance, others don't.

So this is useful for those going to USA, Spain and Greece, where most ATMs now charge a fee. Mostly small notes such as 20€, $20 are dispensed. MoneyCorp ATMs are not present at other airports, and no other brand of multi-currency ATMs let you opt out of conversion.
