Payment into account - details unknown

Hi
On checking my current account via digital banking, I have just spotted that an automated credit for £205 has today gone into my account. The narrative is my surname which is spelt incorrectly (xxxsnn instead of xxxson).
I have phoned my bank - they are not able to provide any further information, other than that the payment has been made via BACS. They have told me they will be able to trace the bank that originated the payment, but will be unable to inform me who the sender is as this contravenes Data Protection.
I do not intend to spend the money.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
Regards 😊

I've not had a similar experience, but if the money has been sent by BACS and has been sent in error, the sender can request it back. Your bank will try to contact you if the sender asks for it back, in case the payment is in dispute. The fact that the reference is nearly correct suggests that the payment was not sent in error. I would wait for three weeks to see if your bank hears from the sender or if you hear from the sender to say that the money is yours. If you hear nothing, I would put the money in a savings account, after a couple of years you are unlikely to be asked to return it, so you are probably safe to spend it then. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0

Others with more knowledge will come along soon but I seem to remember the advice is that if someone asks for the money back, let the bank deal with it. If you reimburse them yourself then they may get the bank to reimburse them too, with your money.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

I had this several years ago, over £4k was dropped into mine.
I rung my bank, told them and they put me through to the fraud department!? Who were unable to help, a few weeks later I had a letter saying it was paid into my account in error and they wanted it back. The letter was forwarded to me via my bank.
Give it time, the money will be taken back out.
Don't spend it, they have 6 years to claim it back.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.0 -

Is the narrative just your surname? Are there any numbers or any other letters?0 -
Who do you bank with0

Further to responses above, the reference of the payment is only the initials of me & my wife followed by our surname.
The bank is RBS.
Thanks to all who have taken the trouble to respond0 -
It sounds as though it was definitely meant for you ie it wasn't someone putting some incorrect details in and it ending up in your account0
