I guess they can since you are now found guilty of the offence from the day it happened
There is a man on Pistonheads Twigthewonderkid who appears to be an insurance industry expert and he is adamant that you do not need to report speeding convictions mid term what ever the contract says
I have no idea if this is correct or a fairy story I would get in touch with him if I were in your shoes

I’m still waiting to hear back regarding my complaint
I would wait to hear back from your complaint before doing anything further. It may be worth writing to them to outline the reasons for your complaint and highlighting that their renewal notice only requires convictions to be disclosed at renewal.
If all the correspondance you have had so far had been verbal you don't know what has been passed to the complaints department or how your conversations have been interepreted. If it's in writing it makes things a lot clearer.0 -
A few years ago at the time my car insurance renewal after going through the details the company told me that I had not informed them of a conviction 3 years earlier.
I had informed them, they had the correct information for me as a named driver on my wifes' policy but had not updated mine.
They would not accept it was an error on their behalf and calculated backdated arrears on my policy as well as the renewal.
I asked what would happen regarding the arrears if I didn't renew with them, the answer was nothing so I renewed with another company!
Not sure if this helps the OP as mid policy but maybe worth asking what happens if you cancel and open another policy with a new company?0 -

My car insurance was renewed in Feb this year. I received a notice of intent in Dec 2018. Told the car insurance company when I renewed that I have received a notice of intent due to speeding and I haven’t received anything further. The person on the phone said that’s fine. Let us know the outcome and nothing further was said. Received the outcome of my speeding last week. I got 6 points. Informed my insurance company and they have decided to backdate my premium as the offence was before my renewal and charge me £505 for this. Currently in the complaint process with them as I’m arguing that when I renewed my insurance I had a clean license and it’s not my fault that I have received the outcome now. And during my renewel I wasn’t informed that my premium would increase nor does it state that in any of the documents.
Any help or advice on what to do?
To reverse the point.
How do they calculate a policy on what could be?0
