Returning to British Gas - Smart Meters
Options
Hi,
I was with BG back in 2016 when they installed our smart meter. Following 2 switches with other providers, I'm now returning back to BG.
The smart meters never worked after I left BG but I'm wondering how much functionality they will provide now I'm returning (they are the same units as per their current brochure).
I've provided meter readings to BG so I'm assuming the switch has just happened. The smart meter is plugged in and showing usage in its display, but the tarrif (and costs reading) is all wrong. There are no error messages on the device.
Has anyone returned to BG and got the smart meter working 100% ?

My original smart meter was fitted by British Gas... since then I've been with Avro, Ovo, Bristol Energy and possibly more. Does it make any difference to me? Not at all. I've always kept monthly meter readings and won't ever rely on the Smart Meter readings. I've removed the IHD in both my own house and my father's house - they're a total waste of space.#2 Saving for Christmas 2024 - £1 a day challenge. £325 of £3660

Any smart meter that was installed 1 year ago. let alone 3 years ago, will usually become dumb following the very first switch of supplier.
The authorities suggest such smnart meters will be updated later this year or perhaps next, over the air, to enable them to become smart again.
You'll have to wait and see if that ever materialises...0 -

As do I, but my IHD still works and allows me to remotely read my meter which is located outside, thus saving me getting wet or cold when I want a reading.
I can see how much energy I'm using and get historical, daily, weekly and monthly data so mine's not a waste of time.
Dunno about BG, mine was installed by SEE a couple of years ago and I've been with Co-op, IRESA, Octopus, and now Eversmart - the only thing it doesn't give is pricing data (which was wrong even when I was with SSE)
What I'd really like though is to get the data from it so I could load it into a spreadsheet - that would make it really usefulNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
If the WAN light on the hub is orange, it means the sim is deactivated. Moving back to BG, it would only take a phone call to get it reactivated.0

Switches usually take about three weeks, of which the first 14 days are a cooling-off period. The new company will normally send you a series of emails confirming the changeover date and telling you when to submit your changeover reading.
If you haven't been advised of the changeover date then it's very unlikely that it's already happened.0
