Do you ever had any issues with the place or the agents or the landlords past or present

You could conveniently be available for a viewing and just reel off every issue you have ever had especially any current ones.

They will probably find a solution that allows viewing when you are not there

... Preferably while the viewers are within earshot. :D

Thanks for the suggestions, although some are more extreme than I was thinking about!
I have never had any problems with the flat and the landlord is fine (although tricky to get hold of).
I don't want to cause him problems but I feel like I have been "told off" by the agent.
I suspect LL has simply employed the agent to find him a new tenant and he hasn't chosen wisely.
It turns out I do have a spare hour on the day they wanted, I have emailed them but they haven't replied. I can see them turning up without having confirmed the appointment but unless the viewer takes the place we will be back to square one.
Never mind, I shall now return to my packing!

I'd just ignore them, you don't even need to allow viewings, your doing the LL a favour, don't forget he's running a business. I'd offer to be present for viewings, £50 per viewing.

    Update...
Landlord has told agent to stop bu**erring about and get some keys cut.
Suddenly they have come over all polite on the phone calls.

    Cheers
