Why are news websites (and a few others) slow?

I'm baffled as to why 99% of news websites, ebay and thesaurus.com are so slow, I'm starting to give up on them. I have checked for viruses, malware etc. on my laptop and all is ok. Any ideas?

Big, big, big front pages laden with lots of stories and lots of pictures, along with adverts and links.

    Perhaps it's a slow news day? ;)

+1 to other comments about ad blockers, I use uBlock Origin and if I'm on a mobile hotspot it really speeds up ad-heavy sites.

Yep - its the horrible amounts of javascript etc pulling in ads from loads and loads of different sources, you would be amazed how many get requests are sent at the loading of most of these news site pages ..

Use an adblocker at the very least .. and/or noscript

Thesaurus.com loads images and data from dictionary.com

    It also links to pubmatic.com, cookielaw.org, sfdict.com and googletagservices.com
