Custom Plates - What's the Difference Between DVLA & Sellers
Options
Hi all.
Going to buy the missus a custom plate and found this belter on NetPlates - https://www.netplates.co.uk/number_plates/buy/gem-87
She was born in 87 and her names Gemma so that's definitely my choice.
But I've heard you can buy plates directly from DVLA for less but you have to do more?
I just wanna know the process if you go through DVLA, what makes that process different to sellers?
Cheers

You can't buy that plate direct from DVLA as they don't have the rights to sell it on anymore, whoever has it on retention has the right to sell it, whether it be that netplates company or whoever is using it to sell that plate.
https://dvlaregistrations.dvla.gov.uk/
That's the official DVLA page, which has all the plates they have available for sale.0 -
I get the feeling the OP will have to duck for cover....0

You will find a lot of companies selling personal plates don’t actually own them. If you buy from them they often then buy the plate from the DVLA and then sell it to you at a highly inflated price.
Check for a plate at https://dvlaregistrations.dvla.gov.uk before contacting any of these companies that claim to own a particular plate.0 -
DVLA Select only sell unissued plates, mostly prefix (A123ABC) and current-style (AB51CDE). Anything suffix or "undated" is almost certainly a previously issued plate that's been transferred around.
Damn near any extant plate is transferable. If it's transferable, the current keeper can ask as much money as they like for it, like any other private sale of anything. It's up to a putative buyer to agree it's worth that, and buy it, or disagree and not.
There are various plate agents - most of whom simply advertise the plate being sold by a private individual, for commission.
You might find that plate listed by one or more agents - but not by DVLA themselves.
BTW, before you splooge £7,500 on GEM 87, you might like to know that DVLA will be auctioning GEM 7A in a couple of weeks - for a guide price of £350...0 -
It only costs £14 to change your name via deed poll

What is your wife's current number plate?

Yes the DVLA sell unissued plates, and their prices vary, depending on what they think they will sell for.
The site you have chosen is acting as an agent for the owner of the plate, they advertise it and hopefully sell it, they take a huge wack and give the owner of the plate what they have agreed too
I had ( just sold) a cherished plate and the DVLA had the next number up for sale at £3500. I went to one of these sites and they offered me £600 and advertised at £2500. I stuck it up on a local FB selling site and it went in two hours at more then I bought the car for0 -
Why's that? :rotfl:0
