Nursing cushions - Useful or just a waste of money? Any recommendations?

Hello,
I am due to have a baby in a few days and in lots of things I have read, nursing pillows are reccomended, especially for breastfeeding. I definately intend on breastfeeding (for many reasons including the moneysaving) and wondered if these pillows genuinely do help or if they are just something else to spend your money on. I do have a back problem so thought it could be helpful, but is a standard pillow just as good (in which case I have lots of those here so we won't have a shortage). I'm not sure if I do really need one or whether I am just tempted because I am stuck at home alone and extremely bored waiting for this baby to come out!
Spending money is so tempting when you are this bored so actually, any cheap ideas of how to keep me occupied considering the terrible weather and the fact that moving around is very hard at the moment, would be much appreciated to try to stop me spending money that I don't really have to spend.
Thanks

I used one because I already had a v-cushion one, but yes, I did find it useful. I mainly used it at night when I fed in bed. During the day when I fed on the sofa, I tended just to use a sofa cushion. It has also come in useful now that LO is sitting, as a cushion to put behind her to make any falls softer!
I'm not convinced I would have bought one especially, as everything I used it for could be replaced with a normal cushion, but I did find it useful.0 -
i fed my ds myself and never had one of them pillows. i used the cushions from the couch and when upstairs in bed i was lying down ( also found this the easiest way to feed) so no i would not buy one but only because i never had one . a nice comfy cushion will do the same job.
and for spending money when bored:o
i do it all the time . i buy proberly every bargain on the "grabbitt while its there " forum. i like the buzz of getting a parcel .:o
and spending money
but i do only spend money that i can afford. but half the time i end up buying it for someone else ....
i hate being bored the only advice enjoy it cause when baba comes you wont have time to be bored....... enjoy the peace and quiet while you can.Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!0 -
I did find mine useful for feeding and also when they are learning to sit up

I had foam one that I could strap to me, which meant it was very firm and high up, so DS had no problems reaching me. As time went one I found I didn't need it any more - DS could support his neck a lot better etc.
This is the one I had - it's meant for twins.

I breastfed both my two girls, and managed without one.0

I too breast fed my two girls and did not have any special cushions and managed comfortably. I think you will find that you will have plenty of other essentials that you will need to buy once the baby is born0

Save your money, I used a pillow folded in half and placed under the arm, it was much more comfortable.
It also saves you from relying on it, as when you're out and about, you'll need to compromise and use a handbag, changing bag or anything else you can get your hands on to get comfy!
(I fed in public on a number of occasions (discreetly) and you literally have to use anything you can!)
Good Luck and stick with it - it's worth it !!0 -
I had one and loved it..~BUT~ I bought mine from an NCT sale for £3, and I bought it early in pregnancy so used it every day in bed before the baby was born. It was fantastic under my bump and between my knees....it was the sort that's filled with lots of little bean bag beads.
Once he was born, I used it as a nursing pillow, and once he stopped breastfeeding I used it to sit him up on the floor.
However, I wouldn't have paid more than £5 for it
, certainly if I'd only been using it once the baby arrived.
Good luck with the baby....and as for stuff to do before s/he arrives...I really got into nesting. I was found up a ladder dusting shelves most of the time...including in labour
.....never dusted them since though

DD found this very useful with DGS1 and in the early stages of DGS2 and 3. However, she now is comfortable feeding whenever and wherever. I think she just felt it was a wee resting place for the boys when she was tired. They were elevated for feeding and she could just cuddle them on the pillow when feeding. She actually quite often used it for back support rather than the baby. Also know she used it during pregnancy when in bed and bump was uncomfortable. It provided a bit of extra support.

Hi,
I used this cushion:

It was a godsend as I had an emergency c-section so it kept DD off my scar plus she was at the right height to feed when she was tiny.
I used it to help her sit up as well as it supported her and had a soft landing.
Mum used to laugh at me as I would be sat feeding her with a plate of toast resting on the cushion for me to eat!
