Yes, Ryobi said they will not repair within the first two years (despite the warranty saying they will). They told me they would only do anything if I had purchased an additional 3rd year cover (even though the lawn mower broke down within two years - after 23 months.)
I am so frustrated as up until now I loved my Ryobi lawn mower and would have recommended it to anyone. I certainly won't ever be using Ryobi again and would advise people who are considering any of their equipment to check in writing if they are will to repair or replace (as their warranty states) if the item breaks down in the first two years.
Did you take it to a Ryobi service station as the warranty proscribes?

You need to sort this with Argos directly, your contract was with them not
    Ryboi.
Argos will often buy out the Warranty from certain companies to get a bigger discount.
Ask to discuss with a senior person at Argos.

His contract with regards to statutory rights is with Argos, but as he has said they are asking for an independent report (as is their right to after 6 months).

He has a second contract with ryobi which is with regards to their warranty. So basically they have to follow the terms they gave at the time (which we dont know).

If argos have bought out the warranty hen again this needs to be stated to the OP so he knows where he stands (its unlikely here as Ryobi always offer a two year warranty with every product as standard, so nothing to buy out).
