I only shower at the gym. Makes gym membership seem cheaper.
Yes, I do the same at the swimming pool, but you sometimes hear people say I will have a shower when I get home. Not very logical when you are already wet anyway and the shower is free ! Not very MSE .

We have a combi boiler which is good, but unfortunately it does take a while for hot water to come through.

We have a hot water tank but the hot still takes ages to come through at any point in the house. So not only a waste of heat but a waste of water.

Could that be because some/a lot are communal and some/many prefer privacy??

Does the boiler have a pre heat function? Reduces heat up time a bit, but you will find the boiler randomly fires up to heat the plate heat exchanger up.... So it uses a bit more gas.

Heres a tip if youre on a water meter. Educate the family to have a pee when they are in the shower. Saves a lot of toilet flushes over a year!!!!     HeHe.

My boiler has an eco setting, which doesn't pre-heat. When he installed it, my plumber said, "I'd recommend you don't switch off the eco setting. If you've never had it you won't miss it, but if you try it you won't want to be without it...."
  • All this chat got me wondering what our yearly usage was too. Looked it up for Nov 21 to Oct 22

    Electric is 1597 kwh
Gas      is 5717 kwh (boiler is 18 years old now)

I know my shower lasts a max of 2.5 minutes because I timed it many many years ago out of interest, and if anything its quicker these days. My wife takes a little longer but not much because the hot water makes her skin flaky.

If we want to turn on the heating we will turn the thermostat up to whenever it 'clicks on' (if its over 15 then its warm enough not to need it anyway) We have never seen the point of having the house at a certain temperature. Never in 35 years of marriage have we ever had heating on overnight.

On the news they always refer to a typical household usage, but in fact the figures they use are for an average typical household. There are also figures for the typical low usage/small household. They are 8000 KWh for gas and 1,800 Kwh for electricity. So you are below both.
The figures for a typical high usage/large household are 17,000 kwh for gas and 4,300 Kwh for electricity

I have quick showers and always finish them off with a minute of cold water, supposed to be good for you😂.  Just back from lovely 8 day sunny break to Turkey, a shame our son couldn’t come cos of work as no doubt he had the heating on a lot. I assume their petrol prices etc are far cheaper than here as a 10 minute taxi ride was less than a fiver.
I was pricing up 30 day break with jet2 to Canaries for January and couldn’t believe how cheap it was, from £800 each.
So when I have retired maybe we will just go abroad for a couple of months during winter as I do love my holidays, despite not liking sunbathing. Could probably do it cheaper DIY, book my own flights and a decent Airbnb will do us.

Interesting to see that I'm therefore doing reasonably well for gas at 7409 kwh, but not so good on electricity at 3403 kwh.
