Seashell. Just out of interest, in the event of a serious market downturn, would you consider part time work? I think from reading your thread im correct in thinking your in your early 50s.
I think the most serious downturn was 1929. Withdrawal rates should cater for that eventuality.  If the markets ended up worse than that then we are all screwed anyway.
There were already tough times in Europe post WW1.  Many people didn't own shares back then. Very different times. People got by. Early retirement wasn't even on the agenda.

To me part time work, doing something you enjoy would be a very positive move into partial retirement. It would provide structure to the week, some social intetaction and help finances. After a lifetime at the coal face, I would  struggle going into full retirement. Each to their own i guess.

You're not the first person to wonder why I walked away from a decent (but already part time) job!!
My response has been “so you think I should work until I can’t any more?” Some people will choose that, or have to work, but if you don’t then it’s inevitable that you’ll leave at some point. Happy days if it’s with good memories!

The most difficult part of my retirement planning, bar none, was recognising that more isn’t always better.

Should we now factor the cost of a nuclear bunker into our retirement plans?

Emigrating maybe a more preferable option.

I looked at emigrating to Australia when retired but unfortunately it was a no go as have no relatives there etc, so restricted to 90 days a year. Could flit between Australia, New Zealand and fiji though
It's just my opinion and not advice.

How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

You may have read in another thread of mine, but we've just fixed our fuel tariff at the Eon Next V12, as our current cheap fix expires mid April.

Cost (on actual usage) going from £690, to £1700.   April cap would be about £1490.   So we've taken a punt.

Heaven only knows what the October cap's going to be, that's if it's not reviewed earlier than then.

    This is not investment advice.
Your money may go "down and up and down and up and down and up and down ... down and up and down and up and down and up and down ... I got all tricked up and came up to this thing, lookin' so fire hot, a twenty out of ten..."
