If so how much have you spent over the last (say) 20 years, and how much have you saved over the last couple of (covid) years compared with what you planned to spend?..just out of interest (?) I have calculated that our total spend for the last 10 years is pretty much identical to the previous 10 years.
We do have them broken down into categories, so we can see trends over time, but then so much of spending is discretionary to a point, I'm not sure that tells me much!
Is there a reason you monitor yours so carefully still and do you keep an emergency fund? It will be interesting to see if you continue to do that as you get older and other income streams kick in. From the sound of it though you do seem to spend sufficient for your lifestyle.
Well, I started off doing it to see what we were spending and where, out of curiosity and also because I've had the time (I was part time for years before finishing for good). Also, we used to have Microsoft Money, on our old PC, which (for some reason, can't remember) we didn't carry on with on our first new laptop. So I was trying to replicate what that had told us.
My spreadsheets have evolved over the years, and now I have 3. One for tracking spending and current balances, one for tracking our total pot over time, and another for predicting growth/spends/inflation in the years ahead.
Now it's sort of a hobby, and just "what I do". All receipts get logged and then ticked off as they clear, so it's not a big job, daily, just takes a bit of time at month end to close off one and move to the next.
Will I continue? Probably, unless I don't have the time, or get bored of it.
As for an emergency fund....at this moment in time (or by early September), we're going to be down to our last £100 (without having to rob our ISAs).
Long story...but basically we have a fixed rate/term account maturing in early September, of £60,000, so at least £20,000 of that will be held back as cash, along with c.£17,000 from DH's first pension later on that month.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)2 -

We actually carried on in Aldi, as it was about the only thing you were allowed out to do in the early days. It was a "day out" and a change of scenery!!! The highlight of our week!!!How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)5 -
For some reason I have had email notification of the last few replies. I have never had email notification of replies to forum threads before. I have looked through preferences etc but cannot see anywhere to switch email notification off or on.Does anyone know how I can control this?0

I have no idea, other than to look in all your settings and preferences?!? I've not changed anything my end. Maybe ask in the "feedback" section? How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -

Many thanksWrong! It IS Sea_Shell's thread, and I and others consider it to be an important one.It is a thread based on the premise of providing a clear example of the progress of one member of public's progress during her, and her partner's, journey into their retirement years. I have the thread bookmarked because I find what people have to say about the subject of the thread important enough to read.If you want to be rich, live like you're poor; if you want to be poor, live like you're rich.15 -
Thank you for everyone's continued support of my "Retirement Diary".
It does wander OT occasionally, but not often, so if I've offended anyone by trying to bring it back into line then...sorry, not sorry!!!How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)6 -
