If I tried to do serious plumbing myself, then it would definitely take ages and not be a proper job !

Most plumbers dislike customers who try to do it themselves. I am in favour of have a go heroes. I always get a warm reception from folk where its all gone wrong. The wife is usually scolding hubby, you can cut the tension with a knife. That customer truly understands that perhaps it might just be a skilled job. With the advent of plastic plumbing anyone can do it, cant they? What harm can a drop of water, sewage, oil, or gas do. Lol

It's not complicated. You always get people who do it for a living trying to make it sound more complex than it is.

I would say yes, but bear in mind some people are not practical people and so may be more prone to messing it up. 

There will always be diyers who have to call in a pro to assist and these are the ones that the tradespeople cite when they talk about diyers, however they don’t see the millions who just get on with it and don’t have cause to call in anyone else.

We could DIY, but we'd rather not.   Been there done that!!

We will be doing some bits, like a little bit of tiling/decorating and stripping out.

Washing dishes isn't complicated but I still prefer a dishwasher.

Quite.   We don't have one, but it's essentially about what we all choose to spend/not spend on vs. can/can't do.

We don't currently have a cleaner/gardener/decorator/car washer/ironer/window cleaner etc etc.

But one day, we may choose to employ any (or all) of the above.

My initial query was how to pay for it, not should we!

Although not a very practical person, I can do a bit of basic DIY, but even these small jobs, always takes three times as long as expected ( not counting decorating which is more predictable) Despite being retired I have too many other things to do than spend days with my head under a sink trying to loosen some stuck joint , issuing a stream of expletives !
I earnt my money by being a professional in one area, so I am quite happy to pay a professional to work on my house.

Look this is a MONEY SAVING forum where people share tips on SAVING money. Paying someone to do something you could do yourself is not MONEY SAVING.

As a regular poster you will know that there are also many discussions about the goal of money saving, For those not in debt or poor financial straits it is not an end in itself. Money is saved in some areas, often with a view to spending it on something else, like a plumber !
