How will family life be better? Won't you be out at the time the other is in? Actually that sounds perfect :)

My husband and kids will be in bed asleep when I go out. I'll be back in time to make sure my kids are ready for school, then I'll sleep (hopefully) while they are all out at work/school. Then I'll be there in the afternoons for homework and making dinner. It will also be nice to have the evenings to spend with the family. I worked evenings for 5 years and that was really horrible, me and hubby were like ships that passed in the night 😐

If it's too awful, I'll just have to try to get a day job and have the hassle of childcare I suppose.

Sleeping whilst they are at school, is not enough hours sleep. What do you plan to do in holidays, when they are there during the day?

Shutters work better than blackout blinds/curtains. as already said, sleepmask, earplugs, disconnect phone, do not disturb sign on the door, windows shut. Also find something thats your stimulus for sleep and establish a routine. I listen to guided meditation. Took a few weeks of listening to the same voice, but gradually the time it took for me to fall asleep decreased, now i just have to hear a few words, and im out like a light.

Also try not to gravitate back to normal daytime hours, on the days you arent working. Are your nights back to back, as Static nights are easier to cope with than a rotating rota. Going from dayshifts to night, and back to day in the course of a week, is much harder

This isn’t sustainable long term as you won’t be getting enough sleep just in school hours.

The best way to survive nights is to make your body clock reflect a ‘normal’ body clock, so wake up in time to get ready, have breakfast and head to work just as you would if you started at 9am, and stay awake for a few hours after you get home to have dinner, get things done, watch a bit of telly etc. Jus5 as you would if you got home at 6pm.

Thanks for the advice everyone. It sounds like things will be more difficult than I thought. I'll still give it a go but if it's too hard I can always look for something with more sociable hours.

Knew someone who did permanent nights in a supermarket for 20 years. He didn't age well.

How many hours do you sleep now?

What time will you drop kids of at school and then get home? Are you quick to go to sleep? What time will you be up to collect again?

Have you worked out when your meal times will be and does this fit in?
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

I usually sleep 5-6 hours, I can usually fall a sleep relatively easy unless I have a lot on my mind, this week with interviews and the stress of waiting to hear I've been lucky to get 3 hours a couple of times 😐

The kids can walk themselves to school, they'll leave at 8. They get home around 3.45 and could let themselves in if I was still asleep, my 15 yo has a key.

I usually just eat once a day, in the evening so that will fit in fine.

    Thanks for the advice

In that case I think it would work. No way would it for me, I love 7hrs sleep and my food :) but if 3-5hrs works for you with 1 meal then it would be no different. It would be my idea of hell but then I know it would be. Whereas you are going in to it knowing its what's you do now.

3hrs sleep and I'd be hallucinating....

Working nights isn't for everyone but as someone who used to work nights I found, in the Summer, that placing a pillow cover in the freezer for around half an hour or so helped at times. As did a cold flannel.

I stopped working nights well over a year ago and even after the transitions to days I found myself wide awake thinking I should be at work... Which is why I'm glad I'll be moving back to working nights again soon!

School holidays soon, so 6 weeks of kids playing out on street and back gardens all day. That is if any of them play out now, or are they all glued to XBoxes?
