New job working nights

Hi, I've just been offered a new job working a few nights a week, does anyone have any tips on how to manage the transition?

I think I will be fine actually working the shift because I'll be kept busy but I am a bit worried about trying to sleep in the daytime, is it really difficult?

Thanks for any help,

All dependent on the individual. It made me ill, but some people love it. Each to their own.

I used to work a 3 shift, weekly rotation system, and never had any problem sleeping. I was a lot younger then though.

A lot of chronic ill health is associated with night shift working.

I used to work 3 or 4 10-8 night shifts, then evenings, days, mornings. Messes up your social life but travelling to work for the nights was a doddle.

You can't get your rest before hand - I used to have light meal when I got home then sleep till about 4.. OK most of the time but delivery people were a nuisance.

Ear plugs and black out curtains.
Meet up with mates for breakfast instead of dinner.
If it's only a few nights a week you will adjust.

I know a few people that work permanent nights. They appear to enjoy it. Equally I have known people that worked nights on a rotating shift pattern and a few of them really struggled. It can play havoc with diet, sleeping, social life and if you have family their lives as well.

Thanks everyone, hopefully it works out as working nights means family life will be a lot easier to manage between myself and hubby and no extra childcare needed!

    Hi
I am a "dawn lark" who used to work what I call Continental shifts ("earlies" "lates", nights then time off then start again.
    I LOATHED the nights.
Worked with a "night owl" who LOVED the nights.
Anyway, good blackout curtains and earplugs are a must.
I used to put a note on my front door saying "shift worker on nights, please do not disturb"
Also I used to unplug the phone.

Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

I worked nights over Christmas one year. Things that really helped sleep was wearing sunglasses or blue light blocking glasses before bed, wearing an eye mask, relaxing music and/or ear plugs, depending how noisy your surroundings are! When the neighbours were noisy I'd have calming music on loudish (to me) to drown out the outside noise then ear plugs to dullen the music. Sounds weird but it worked. Chamomile tea before sleeping if you feel wired.

Be careful if you drink on your days off, I found the lack of sleep really heightened the effects of alcohol.

How will family life be better? Won't you be out at the time the other is in? Actually that sounds perfect :)
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....
