Laptop - using Wi-fi on the go?

When I am overseas, it is simple to ask the waiter for a Wi-fi code and I am off.
However, when in the UK, I tried the 'free Wifi' in McDonalds, and they wanted me to register my details etc... A lot of hassle. Then when you try to connect, the whole thing does not work!. It is also frustrating trying to remember the password for each establishment....
I want to ask people who regularly work on laptops on the go, how they get around this?
I do have a personal hotspot feature on my phone, but I am not sure if it is good enough for a Windows laptop.

The things about using public wi-fi is that it is not secure. So unless I'm sure I'm in a place wit ha secure wifi, I often use my phone's hotspot. And it works just fine. That depends on your mobile data too, so take note of your internet allotment. For a whole day of use for work, I don't go beyond 1GB, so it's all fine with me.0

Maybe lots of folk are doing things which don't require internet access
Writing reports, spreadsheets, programming/coding, etc. ?0 -
Log in as asked once then phone knows the log in details .
Many do not ask for personal details .0 -
I have been using my phone as a hotspot for years, how fast do you need? I typically obtain in excess of 20 Mb/s download and have unlimited data (Three SIM only contract). It’s a lot less hassle that using “free” WiFi, and in nearly every case much faster and more reliable.
Using a phone as a hotspot does eat the battery quickly, so I power the phone from a USB socket on the laptop.0 -
Mobile hotspot from your phone provided you have a mobile tariff with lots of data.0
