ApplePay and Credit Cards

Hi,
I’ve been a long time user of the moneysavingexpert website, but just joined the forum.
I have a question for you.
I like to use my phone using ApplePay. I did get an Amex card for the cashback, but, not many places take Amex, and even less take it using contactless, making my ApplePay redundant. So, I’m looking to change credit cards, but I want one I know will work with ApplePay. What would you recommend? I have looked at many credit cards, but none say they will work with ApplePay.
Thank you in advance.....

Amex is an Apple Pay authorised bank. There should be no issue using contactless when you are using Apple Pay as it is Apple technology (and not Amex) delivering the transaction.

If you are worried about it don't tell the cashier that it's Amex. Just refer to it as Apple pay.

Apple Pay participating banks in Europe and the Middle East

Scroll down to "The United Kingdom".
  • I’ve used my Amex card with Applepay.
  • I used to have a Santander Credit Card, and I used to use it in Asda, but since using Amex, it doesn’t like it, but they also don’t accept Amex contactless.

Isn't it a case of if the underlying card isn't accepted by the vendor then Apple Pay using that card won't work either? I'm sure that's how Android Pay works. So if a vendor doesn't accept payments by Amex then they won't accept Apple Pay using Amex.

While you would think this is the case (and I wish it was), it actually isn't as simple as that.

There are places where the technology isn't compatible between shop terminal and Amex on Apple Pay. McDonald's is an often cited case where in some restaurants they have professionally printed banners saying they accept Visa, Mastercard and Amex contactless but not Amex via Apple Pay. I've experienced the same thing myself in some shops.

Thanks to yourself and Mr MisterBaxter - I stand corrected!

I've got my Amex on Google Play and it doesn't work if the shop doesn't accept Amex.
