Sky satelite dish-should I leave well enough alone?

Hi there,

Got a guy tp put in a new Sky dish for me, everything seems fine all channels perfect except sky info and sky channels 998 and 999, which break up a lot.

Signal strength is good ,I checked it in the system and quality is ok too.

Since they are are only sky information channels should I leave well enough alone, as all the other channels I have checked are perfect? I mean if I got him to adjust the dish slightly and got those channels that are breaking up fixed, then I feel that maybe a fault would develop on another channel that I would want to watch.

Thanks

Anything in the line of the dish.

Those channels are not important now are they?

What other channels are on the same transponder (good is thataway -> ), if they such alkso then it is misaligned. It it is misaligned I would get someone else back as he is obviously an idiot. Dish alignment is simple if you have the right equipment.

Leave well enough alone..........when you lose channels you want to watch, then fiddle with it
    Political?....I dont do Political....well,not much!
  • Thanks for replies, Its just the free to air channels I get, no sky sub. Its an old basic Thomson box , could be going on for 20 years as I bought it second hand, so don't know if that could have any bearing on it.

Truth be known it is a satellite dish not a Sky dish, c.f. digital aerial for terrestrial TV, I digress if all channels show fine then wait till you hit problems. For me I would get a Freesat box with a Pvr and would look for a Humax HDR but they are thin on the ground

I would leave it alone unless you know what you are doing. You could end up with more issues. If it bothers you get a workman out, if not then just leave it.

What are the signal strength & quality levels, 100 & 90 are recommended. Use channel 101 for testing and then go to 998 and check again.

Speak to the engineer and see what they recommend.

When there is extreme heavy rain, I noticed a slight degradation. In your situation, it might make things worse.

Thanks to everyone for replies, as regards the above the signal strengthon both channels would be about 85-90% and quality is about 40-50%.

Don't really understand these figures, would the signal strength be the most important one?

I think on the old dish it was about the same only I got more break up on a different channel that I like to watch, hence the reason for not wanting to get the installer back to try to fix the sky info channel in case it knocks some other channel out.

He is a proper installer has done a few tv jobs for me.

On the plus side I have the magic eye in three other rooms and changing the channel number on the box has really improved the picture through the magic eye.

Quality is more important than strength of signal, because you can have a crap signal that's of good quality but a good signal with crap quality is no use to you.

Sky signal quality should be at least 50% during dry weather, but may fall to 40% during heavy rain or extreme weather.

The signal strength reading is less critical and varies according to the type of LNB fitted to the dish and the length of coaxial cable feeder used. The longer the cable run, the lower the signal strength reading will be on the Sky signal test screen.

Note that if a heavy thunderstorm passes overhead then you ain't going to get anything until it moves no matter how good the installation was...
  • Thanks again. Can we rule the actual box out of the equation here, or is it possible it might be it, as its an old box?
