Is there a general age at which pensioners have to pay a premium for car insurance?

The title says it all.

EDIT: meaning at what general age do pensioners have to pay an additional premium or excess because of their age.

2nd EDIT: and is the additional/extra premium likely to be 50 to 100%

All policyholders have to pay the premium to get a policy - even pensioners!

I think it depends on the particular insurer, but in general I've heard that premiums start to rise once you get to the point where you have to reapply for your licence at 70

    Calm down

Your OP (which you have now edited) did simply say "the title says it all"
Pensioners are on the warpath over free telly and are always looking for freebies aren't they??

Now you've explained your title then there's no answer.

As you get into OAP your premium gets loaded each year, just as it gets cheaper when you are a teenager!

If you want to cut your premium keep an eye on the annual mileage you declare - no point in paying for the 20,000 you did when you were at work when you only do 5,000 miles in retirement
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

No, you can only pay an excess if you make a claim....

But is the excess likely to increase with age?

No - because you choose the level of excess

The policyholder only chooses the level for voluntary excesses, but cannot choose the level for any compulsory excesses (except by shopping round!)
