Despite asking BT for the cheapest deal for my Aged P who is on a fixed income & who doesn't need unlimited broadband, the cheapest deal I was offered was the standard line rental &broadband at £31.99 rising to £37.99. I was bemoaning this to my friend who works with the elderly & she told me about BT Basic- they don't seem to offer this when you ask about cheap deals, even if it's clear you're talking about someone who may qualify, but if you do meet criteria below, it's seriously good value!
BT Basic + Broadband will cost £9.95 in total a month (which includes your BT Basic line rental).
Who can get BT Basic?
You must be getting one of the following means-tested benefits:
Income Support
Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
Pensions Credit (Guaranteed Credit)
Employment and Support Allowance (Income related)
Universal Credit (and are on zero earnings

BT Basic you have to apply for and as you say be eligible for it.
Remember to add calls on as well. BT Basic gives you £1.50 free calls and then your call charges are capped at £10 a month.
If you don't make any calls it's £9.95
If you don't go over the 15Gb a month limit and make no calls (or stay in the free allowance), it's £9.95.
Otherwise the maximum ceiling figure assuming you stay in the usage limit is £19.95. Failing that it's + £2.20 for every Gigabyte or part over the 15Gb limit. 0.9Gb = £2.20. 1.1Gb = £4.40.0 -

Make sure the person you're posting on behalf of knows about the data download limit. If they make use of catch-up TV for instance that will come out of their usage.
If you use the tool at the top of this page you'll find plenty of options for UL BB & telephone line for around £17 a month.0
