Vendor rights when selling car

I put my late Dad's MGB on the market and had someone come and look at it. He was very interested and gave the impression he was a dealer. He left a £500 cash deposit and said he'd be in touch about collecting the car. Once he'd left I felt something wasn't right, he seemed a bit odd and things didn't stack up. I contacted him and told him I'd had second thoughts about selling my Dad's pride and joy. I asked him for his bank details so that I could transfer the deposit to him. He seems reluctant to give me the details although he has accepted that I don't want to sell him the car. What rights do I have, how do I get his £500 back to him with no address or bank details?
I'd like to draw a line under this and move on.

What wasn’t right? You have entered into a deal and should now honour it.

He is not obliged to give you those details.

Has he offered you the right money for the car or not?

If he is a dealer he will probably sell it for more to someone else - there will be less grief for you as a seller, as long as the balance payment is not fake notes or hacked bank account.

This isn't really about the buyer, is it? You're selling a car. Either you want to sell it, and this guy offered the right price, or you don't.

So how did he pay the deposit? Cash? I presume you have his name and address? Post him a cheque.

In the OP, the OP says he has no address.

I would of thought they would of at least asked for a receipt for the £500 deposit? Maybe not a trader after all, just a bit dim.
  • I think you should meet them at a place of their choice and hand back the cash, as you are the one going back on the deal. I would find it rather odd if I had paid a deposit for a car and then they changed their mind and asked for my bank details.

Maybe he wants the car and is looking for advice on where he stands.

If a thread pops up with the headline "Paid £500 deposit for car, now seller refuses to sell it to me" he will get the advice about how he is in a now legally binding contract.
