Making my car last

Keep an eye on the oil level. I had one of those and after about 80k miles it started to consume oil. It’s a known problem with a whole generation of their petrol engines. Still, they’ve both been incredibly economical and robust cars.0

Been informed it was 2004-2005 cars that were affected but I do check levels and tyres regularly, I worked for Toyota back when these vehicles were in production and remember all too well replacing short motors.0 -

Scotty Kilmer just did a video about this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FGPbSafSpI&t=
You can buy the AT205 Reseal from Amazon.0 -
Short trips are the worst so use a bike or bus for those. Every month do a long journey to make sure the engine gets up to temperature.
Many years ago I worked for a company who had two Vauxhall Cavaliers which did 300k miles without major problems but all they did was very long trips from South coast to Scotland twice a week.0 -
Unless you live by the sea, you're likely to be better off with an annual wash in the summer months. Lots of lovely road film and mud provide excellent salt protection.0

Looks good but expensive at £15 for a small bottle, is there a cheaper equivalent?0 -

I have a 3.5 mile commute, not practical to catch a bus or take a bike.0 -

3.5 bike ride would take about 20 mins on a bike, probably quicker than using the car taking into consideration traffic and parking.
Prior to retirement I used to ride 2 miles to work, on a lunch time I would go for an 8 mile bike ride and on an evening if the weather was nice would go for a 6-10 mile ride.
Buy a second hand bike and enjoy it0 -

That really does depend where you are.
My 5 mile commute takes 10 minutes maximum door to door.0 -
It’s about 7-10 mins, my commute is very rural, no regular buses and is all hills, I’d need a shower when I got there!0
