Security / CCTV

Afternoon All,

Long story short last night the car was broken into - realistically it could have happened anywhere from 16:00 - 07:00 today. No signs of forced entry or damage and there was no note to say that an attempted theft had taken place (something that pops up when the car is left open).

either way, the police are too stretched to really do anything about it, but this has got my good lady all flustered and now she wants CCTV - which realistically will just give us a nice video of anyone doing anything, I doubt it will be much of a deterant or help.....but wasn't even really sure where to start looking - obviously I can google security, but it would be great if there were - any schemes that will help
- registered bodies to ensure the people fitting are legit
- standard of camera I should be looking at getting
- estimated costs for maybe 2 wireless cameras installed or if I should just do it myself.

If you look back on this forum you will see several CCTV threads. One point to note, if your camera is pointing to your car parked on the street you need to be careful and adhere to data protection regulations. See:

The best cameras on the market so far (for the public) are the Sony starvis IMX226 camera. These produce good low light vision, 12mp pictures, and 4k video. They are not cheap and they do not work with all recording systems as 4k at 60fps is a lot of data for a recorder to handle.

The imx226 is used by various camera manufacturers, but it is also quite new on the market too.

    check them out on youtube.

Many surveillance cameras are just cameras - no audio, but some do have it, some support external audio.

Generally things fall into two categories. Simple wireless USB powered CCTV camera, which have clever features like pop-up alters on the phone (which can get annoying over time) or wired systems which record video to a hard disk recorder ( but they may not have clever such as alters to your phone or cloud backup).
realistically will just give us a nice video of anyone doing anything

if you go for a basic CCTV system, then at night time, you will be able to see there is a person doing something to your car, but you will not have enough detail e.g. facial feature. Especially if obscured with a mask or a hoodie.... (but sometimes just knowing what happened is enough... )

    Arlo is an easy self-install.

Wireless cameras, remote control and access, cloud storage for motion-activated footage, switchable between live view and motion activation, e-mail and mobile/tablet notifications of movement, night vision, etc. More detail in my previous posts on same subject.

Get after-market neoprene covers and brackets from Amazon. Use Panasonic "Industrial" range batteries, and you can get up to 14 months between battery renewal, depending on how much you or others activate the cameras.

Hikvision/Dahua cameras are very good quality and can be DIY installed.

If you want a simple just to record system the annke systems on amazon are also good and cheap.
