Motaility car as well as another car

I'm not sure if this is the right section of this forum so please move if needed.
I have a disability which affects my mobility and have just been "awarded" the motability part of PIP so I can apply for a motability car. I currently own a car which is insured in my name and has my sister as a named driver (she lives less than 1/2 mile away from me) as she sometimes uses the car to get my bigger shopping etc. She is finding it difficult to find time to do this as she has work and sometimes has her daughter's kids.
My nephew said he can help out when his mum can't (he lives less than a mile away) and has asked if I can get a motability car for him to use for this and other things he can help me out with BUT I would still like to keep my car which I have previously spent time fixing up when I was healther and also my sister can use it from time-to-time.
Can I do this, have a motability car as well as owning another car in my name which I am insured for?

Probably a model that under 25's cannot drive. I am a long-term Motability customer and there are models listed on the Motability website which Motability will not lease to u-25's, nor allow second- and -third drivers to use if they are u-25. My son qualifies as he is twice that age!
You would be better asking Motability yourself about this via the website, but why cannot you sell or gift your (owned) car to your sister? If you have PIP as "Indefinite" you will have a new car every 3 years. You could ask your sister in exchange for car, to give you the money to lease a better Motability model, with a bigger deposit.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

There is nothing stopping you having both, BUT......
Sounds like it would be more of a car for him, than you.
Motability take a very dim view of abuse like that.0 -

I don't think the current car is a motability car.0 -
Make sure you check the rules carefully as I believe a Motability car can only be used for YOUR benefit. So no-one else can use it to take their kids to school etc. But you do not have to be in the car if someone is running an errand for you.
There was a case some years ago where a relative was driving a motability car away from a hospital after visiting the motability person and had an accident. The motability insurance would not pay as they said she was breaching the terms of the agreement. Think it went to appeal but not sure what happened.0 -
Can't you just claim the enhanced part of the pip as cash, and use it to fund your present car- fuel/insurance etc?I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

Will your nephew be using the car when he isn't helping you to do things?0

As the car will be outside his house he will use it from time to time to do his own thing but know he has the responsibility to help me out.
I want to keep the car I have now, it's only a small car which is cheap to insure, as I've had it for years and when I wasn't like I am now I did work on it to suit myself, it's like my little bit of independence if I want to go on a short drive, plus my sister uses it when needed when her husband has their car.
I'm just kind of covering as many bases as I can for when I need help but don't want to do anything which may seem as I'm bending or breaking rules as I don't want to lose this benefit and opportunity which has been given to me.
I have sent an email to the Motability website but have not received a reply so thought I'd post on the forum to see if anyone else has been in this situation before.0 -
The benefit and opportunity is the higher-rate mobility PIP.
You can choose to trade that money for a car, if you wish, at favourable rates - with certain rules.
One of those rules is to not abuse it by using it to provide somebody else a cheap car...
You do not need the motability car. Your relative wants it. He may or may not occasionally help you out with it - as he could with any car, including yours.
So if you don't want to abuse and risk losing the benefit and opportunity, it would seem wise to not use the money on something that you don't need, and which is arguably bending the spirit (and that's viewing it charitably) the rules around the scheme, don't you think?0 -
I hope you don't let your nephew have it, as i for 1 as a taxpayer would not be happy if my taxes were helping fund a cheap car for your nephew to use.ANURADHA KOIRALA ??? go on throw it in google.0
