Citbank debit card in the USA

Options
Hi,

does anyone know if a UK Citibank debit card is treated as a credit card in the US?
I booked a hotel in NY through hotwire which explains that you must have a credit card in your name when booking in.
Any other info I should know if I decide to use my citibank card in the US?

Many thanks

i have a GBP current and USD saving account with citibank.

i was told i can link the current account to the USD saving account, such that i can withdraw USD in US using citibank ATM free of charge.

you will need to link it back to a GBP account when you are using it in UK, otherwise you would charged for the exchange rate etc.

Hotels and car hire firms will commonly require a credit card - not a debit card - so that they can charge any unexpected expenses that may arise.

A debit card is no good, as they have no idea whether you have any funds in your account or not.
  • If you use a debit card you can have your account emptied in an instant if the details get into the wrong hands. You would not be covered against fraud by the bank. Credit cards are a different matter though. Also never use debit card on the internet, again if you have any probs you have already paid out the money.

    Thats not true.

Visa Debit (and Visa Electron) cards are covered by Visa rules regarding fraud and unauthorised transactions.

Visa Credit Cards also have the protection of the Consumer Credit Act, in addition to Visa rules.
