Weed/grass control fabric for border

I have a sizable garden which I want to make less maintenance of as there is a lot of grass. I'm thinking of putting weed/grass control fabric in front of the established bushes on the border to block the grass from growing and then adding smaller bushes into the fabric, do you think this will work?

Also can you recommend fabric which will be good for this job, I'd expect I'd need 50m x 1m.

Thanks

Yes, it will work, but the fabric on its own won't look great. If you cover it with something like bark chippings, it will look more natural.

Thin, spun polypropylene won't last very long, but good quality woven stuff will do up to 10 years. Alternatively, geofabric, available at builders' merchants is also good, but tends to be white and shows up more till it gets muddy. Why they bleach the stuff in the first place is beyond me!

Don't forget the metal pins to fix the fabric down. The wider ones with pointed ends like this work best:

  • Thanks for the reply, do you have a recommendation for a fabric which is durable?

Hard, because most are made by the Wu Flung Dung Corporation in China nowadays and badged as anything they like, but if you Google the old, reliable trade names of Mypex and Phormisol you may be lucky....at a price.

But you won't be hammering the stuff like nurseries do when they cover walkways with it, so a cheaper product may be fine. I have used QVS in the past and their stuff was OK:
