When you say worth it if your talking about time taken I would say def not. If you mean winning prizes theres always a chance and the chance that you may win is fun! Myself I enter hundreds every day and only had 2 small wins this year so far. A candle & a rugby shirt! I wouldnt like to count the hours that I've spent on here though!! Going on a short break soon that I won last year &
Still enjoying it so will carry on for a bit.

Last week MSE were promoting the fact that the 3 main holiday prizes in a comp were all won by forum users and their reach is greater the DM (the comps forum also gets a fairly regular plug in the weekly e-mail).

I was one of those 3 winners and after speaking with another winner on FB we both advised MSE forum team we were happy to respond to their requests of an interview but did not want it being released to the press and also to make people aware that our wins are a rarity!
Hi Ho Hi Ho it's of to comp I go!
  • If its in the MSE newsletter then its virtually like appearing in the press. :)

Agreed, it says here that 12m people get the MSE email .....

I've got no idea what newspaper reading/circulation figures are these days but I'm sure none of them would be close to 12m !!

I agree with what others say, it really is changed days. I always look at winning a competition like a win on the lottery, it is down to one thing only and that is luck. Except for effort/judged comps obviously.

I started comping in 2004 (wow 15 years ago) and up until the last couple of years have won some amazing and some very big prizes. However, the last couple of years the wins are diminishing rapidly and I have not won one thing this year and I won nothing at all at Christmas in the advents. I have never in the 15 years gone for as long without a win.

I haven't changed anything re the way I comp, I am selective about prizes and always have been and always will be.

    Good luck.

I used to win lots of prizes every month and usually at least one decent one now I seldom win. Have won a Forest Holiday this year worth £545 though so it is possible to win and does make it seem more worthwhile! First big win for a long time though.

I have been comping for around 12 years and in all honestly it is not worth it anymore.... I still do it as I enjoy it but I used to win around 30 prizes a month and at least 1 biggie now I get a couple of little wins a month and i've not had a biggie in years. Social Media has completely changed things in my opinion.

    That bit in bold!!
SM has spoilt it a bit. Not just because of the prizes (which can be beyond naff), but because you can be up against the heavy duty big hitters and their sob stories.
Also those who seem to win everything, (especially at Christmas) yet have been known to complain when someone else 'who isn't even a comper' wins and not one of their circle.
It's a mixture of sob stories, sour grapes and jealously on there. Which is a shame that it has come to this.
There used to be a great thread on here about some of lengths people would go to to win a prize. Unfortunately someone took offence to it, and it got closed :(
It doesn't help with these running off to the papers to brag about winning, and also that the prize quality has really declined the last few years.
We will still have a go, it's just that the joy of winning is now a bit scarce.

I have to mirror the views of a number of forum members on this thread. I have noticed a shift in the last couple of years which has left me with virtually no wins in that time.

Sadly, companies have now realised that they can get more attention from social media outlets with small value prizes and therefore do not need to offer bigger prizes via their website to gain attention, publicity and new custom. We've also had the promotion of comping as a (non-guaranteed) form of income boosting which has swelled the number of people entering competitions, reducing the odds of winning. Of those who are reliable in providing cash and other big prizes, magazines, radio stations and sport prediction ones, a number of magazines are no longer running prize competitions as the magazine market shrinks alongside reduced advertising revenue, I've noticed a reduction in radio cash prizes as of late and the radio groups now experimenting with postal entry as the free entry route (a la Bauer owned Jazz FM's recent Love Supreme competition) or daily prizes with no free entry route (a la Global owned Capital's daily Cash Call competition which is SMS entry only) in the same way the TV competitions went a few years ago. And the remaining big prizes, the football and horse racing prediction games have odds of winning so big, it's comparable to winning the jackpot on the lottery.

These changes, through the rise of social media, reduction in advertising revenue and more profitable alternative ways to run competitions has really hit those who enter as a hobby. And I don't see this trend reversing. Better to tell the uncomfortable truth than a comforting lie.

The thing that gets me is you still get articles in newspapers and mags which suggest people are raking it in with comping, and it surely cannot be true now???

    Annoying, isn't it?
Especially the one recently where the lady was bragging about how much she'd won, yet moaned because she won a season ticket for Leeds and didn't even support the club.
That is sheer greed for me.
It is those people who folk read about and then start comping and then moan about 3 days later 'cos they haven't won anything.
    Spoils it for everybody IMO.
