Ignorance is no defence, you have paid it which is good, unless you are a diplomat, then you have to pay if the vehicle you were in attracts the charges.
It's not up to the gps to tell you, although you put in a route and they usually warn of any toll type charges.

There are signs all over the place warning it's a charging zone! You don't need someone to warn you.

    You can't claim it back.

No, yo can’t claim the money back. It’s incumbent on you to understand the rules and laws where you drive.

I feel your pain, I’ve just been fined £700 in Amsterdam for parking in what I thought was the proper place at work for a good few days before the first fine arrived. I’m annoyed, but at myself, so paid it and moved on.

    You should do the same.

You can't claim it back because you earned it.

What other important signage did you miss or not understand whilst driving in the U.K. as a newcomer? I suggest getting a copy of the Highway Code and perhaps taking a few driving lessons to help you acclimatise to driving here. I've driven in several countries around the world and the U.K. is perhaps the most difficult in terms of rules, signage, congestion, pressure, etc.
