Company car tax on pick up?

I took a double cab pick up as company car after being told that the tax would be greatly reduced due to the car being a light commercial vehicle, HMRC have taxed me just over £10k for this coming year. Is this correct? They have told me they have used the information from my employer, but my employer has told me that no information has yet been passed to HMRC. I have been using the vehicle to deliver tools and transfer equipment between depots. Please can anybody help?

Are you sure they're taxing you 10k instead of simply taxing you on 10k (so 2-4k tax depending what your highest liability rate is)?

When did you get the car? Did you have a previous car? Does your company payroll the benefit?
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

I have a vague recollection that HMRC latched onto the "crew cab" loophole a few years ago now and you see fewer of them now.

What is your tax code? Have you checked your p11d? Sounds like it needs adjusting. Think you can check on Martin's page
  • My tax code is K177, says I owe them money. P11d is showing car benefit at just over £10k, was originally sent out incorrect showing fuel benefit at just around £8k, and tax code of K1422, this has now been corrected as I pay all private mileage. I did have a BMW 2 series but that went back in November last year, on P11d shows both cars charged at around £3.75k BMW for 8 months, Nissan for nearly 4 months. HMRC told me it is worked out on CO2 emissions.
  • I took the car on 19th Nov 2018, replacing BMW 2 series. Benefit is definitely not pay rolled. All websites I have looked at for info, say at 40% tax rate should be paying £1,286

K177? Is that a typo? And HMRC are saying that the value of the vehicle at the point of purchase doesn't affect the amount of tax paid?

That's a perfectly valid tax code. A K prefix denotes that an individual is in receipt of taxable benefits which exceed their personal allowance (if they qualify for one).
